As I embark on the next phase of my academic journey—writing my dissertation—one of the most crucial steps has been securing a strong, supportive committee. For those unfamiliar with the process, selecting your dissertation chair and committee is one of the most important choices you make. These individuals will guide and challenge you, pushing the boundaries of your thinking and helping bring your ideas into clear focus. In many ways, they shape the outcome of your dissertation—and your growth as a scholar.
If you haven't read the previous blog post, my dissertation focuses on a comparative study of creation myths, exploring archetypal themes such as primordial chaos or water at the beginning of time, particularly in the Middle Eastern and Asian traditions. To navigate this complex subject matter, I knew that I needed to find a committee with not only an academic background in creation myths but also an understanding of archetypes through a Depth Psychological lens—one that aligns with my approach to myth and the unconscious.
After much reflection, I’ve begun assembling a committee that embodies these qualities. The chair I’ve chosen brings a deep appreciation for mythology and depth psychology, with a strong interest in cross-cultural and archetypal studies. I sought someone who understands how creation myths do more than recount the origins of the universe—they speak to the human psyche in their creative aspect as creation comes out of the void which represents the unconscious, but also the collective unconscious.
Securing a chair with this background was just the first step. The next phase involves carefully selecting the other members of my committee, ensuring they complement the intellectual and psychological depth of my chair while offering fresh perspectives on mythology, cultural studies, or even comparative religion. Together, I aim to form a well-rounded team who can engage with my exploration of myths, the unconscious, and their rich symbolic meanings.
I’m excited about this process, even as it continues to unfold. Each step brings me closer to the academic exploration of the themes that drive my research. In the months ahead, I’ll share more about how this committee takes shape and how their insights help shape my work.
Thank you for following along with this journey, and stay tuned as I move forward with the support of this incredible team.
