As I begin my dissertation journey over the next two years, I'm excited to delve into the rich and often overlooked creation myths from the Middle East and Asia. My research focuses on the concept of primordial chaos, void, and waters at the beginning of time—symbols that serve as the birthplace of the universe. While these themes have been explored in other regions, my study aims to shine a light on lesser-known traditions, such as Zoroastrianism, Tengrism, and the indigenous myths of Southeast Asia, examining them through the lenses of comparative mythology and depth psychology.
This topic is deeply personal to me, rooted in my upbringing in Hong Kong. Not only was I raised with strong Chinese beliefs, but I was also exposed to a diverse array of cultural beliefs that are not necessarily represented or explored in Western academia. My studies in depth psychology have led me to view creation myths as more than just stories; they are symbolic expressions of the collective unconscious, revealing the shared patterns of human experience. By focusing on the primordial waters of chaos, I hope to uncover how these ancient symbols connect us to our shared humanity and our quest for understanding our origins.
My dissertation will explore these myths across several regions, weaving together a comprehensive understanding of how different cultures perceive the beginning of time. By comparing these myths with those from more familiar cultures, I aim to reveal the universal archetypes that manifest in diverse cultural contexts. I look forward to sharing insights and updates with you as I navigate this fascinating research journey.
